This place was made famous by TV and also by Chubby Hubby foodie blog. Came by the other day around 8pm and they were already closed. Their business is really good, you can see the racks and racks of dim sum baskets stacking till ceiling. No kidding at all.
At first sight, you might be taken apart from the disorganised layout. Kitchen and cashier at one unit, eating places are just foldable tables and chairs placed all over the corridor outside the shop and in scattered units around and nearby. It's hard to even to get the servers' attention since they will be roving around the various units. A little messy and not well-kept in terms of cleanliness but nevertheless, Moi still give it a shot.
I would say the ingredients were really fresh and dim sums were nice but I thought there isn't really much to rave about except that it's value for money compare to Crystal jade and Xiao long bao. But you can tell that the main Chef, Victor did really put his heart into making fresh dim sums. I was a little disappointed with their "special XO sauce" which supposed to be their secret recipe containing dried scallops, XO sauce and numerous other fresh ingredients. Ironically, the XO sauce though chokingly spicy, tasted quite bland.
Service was lacking though... we ordered two kopi-si but only one came and the dessert was the first to be served on our table instead of the dim sums. Maybe because of all the raving reviews, Moi's expectations for Victor's kitchen was somewhat higher so I was a little disappointed with their two publicised dishes : Har kao and Steamed carrot cake. I found them nothing too special.
Instead, Moi felt their you tiao chee cheong fan was very interesting. The fried you tiao was hard and crispy wrapped inside the soft and smooth kway tiao... really very pleasing to Moi's taste. The glutinous rice wrapped with lotus leaf was also really savoury. It contains a good quantity of chicken, salted egg, chinese sausage and chestnut in it. I think what makes Victor's kitchen unique is the good quantity and quality of ingredients used.
Dessert, highly recommended by the waitress, didn't taste that good and in Moi's opinion, a little diluted.
