Mummy cooking

The fact is that Mom hardly cooks these days... and if so she is usually less creativity. She blames it on old age...taking a toll on her creativity and energy. But even with the lack of quantity and creativity, mummy dearest never fail to amaze us with consistently good cooking. I wonder if I would ever be able to attain mummy's culinary enlightment. ;-) I am indeed fortunate... Mummy, love you.

Coffee Bean

Went Coffee Club. Went the coffee connoisseur. So this time went over to Coffee bean to try out their meals. Let put it that Cafe is not meant to dish up nice food... so as long as the food is pleasant tasting and edible, it's fine.

Of the three though I have yet to try all the dishes, I would give the coffee connoisseur the highest rating by far for taste and variety. The caesar salad and Ben egg are quite fine BUT not the mushroom and herb linguine. I suppose the herbal and cinnamon taste mixed with the linguine is really too strong for Moi. The dessert is fine especially the MudPie.

In clockwise starting Top left corner : (1) Caesar Salad (2) Mushroom and Herb Linguine (3) Ben egg (4) Dessert : Mudpie + Tiramisu

And guess who dropped by for drink...?

练习 - 刘德华

Made Twinny sing this song for me. ^_-) The song is based on a true story... so that's why it's so touching. If you would to lose someone you love and very close to you, can you get use not to have him or her around... Time will heal. But tears will flow... because the thought that you are going to get use will be terrible. I am glad the real story had a good ending.

Saltwater by Julian Lennon (video)

And if you want to hear the song sung by Julian Lennon...here's the video.

Source : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OD_8E4bxtmc

Saltwater arranged by Tommy Emmanuel

I found this on YouTube. Even though this is not the version played by Tommy Emmanuel but i think this guy was really great to be able to play Saltwater arrangement by Tommy Emmanuel.

Saltwater by Julian Lennon

Love this song cause I found it so meaningful. It's a song for our Earth... the Earth crying to us cause we are hurting the rock we are living on and we dun have time to heal or mend it....LOVE THE EARTH.

We are a rock revolving
Around a golden sun
We are a billion children
Rolled into one
So when I hear about
The hole in the sky
Saltwater wells in my eyes
We climb the highest mountain
Well make the desert bloom
Were so ingenious
We can walk on the moon
But when I hear of how
The forests have died
Saltwater wells in my eyes

I have lived for love
But now thats not enough
For the world I love is dying
(and now Im crying)
And time is not a friend
(no friend of mine)
As friends were out of time
And its slowly passing by..yyy...yyy...yyy
Right before our eyes

We light the deepest ocean
Send photographs of mars
Were so enchanted by
How clever we are
Why should one baby
Feel so hungry she cries
Saltwater wells in my eyes

I have lived for love
But now thats not enough
For the world I love is dying
(and now Im crying)
And time is not a friend
(no friend of mine)
As friends were out of time
And its slowly passing by..yyy...yyy...yyy
Right before our eyes

We are a rock revolving
Around a golden sun
We are a billion children
Rolled into one
What will I think of me
The day that I die
Saltwater wells in my eyes

Saltwater wells in my eyes

Sun with Moon Revisited

Had dinner @ Sun with Moon again. Food is still nice. Yummy and I had sake...oooooo...that's the best part. We had the kamameshi, sushi moriwase, Tempura moriwase, desserts like Tofu cheesecake, Macha tiramisu, Mochi, Ice-cream mochi, etc. I only managed to take 2 shoots...

SUN Salad

The SUN Salad was very simple but I would say very tasty. And the impressive part is the salad was actually being mixed with a choice of either wasabi or sesame sauce in a long jar by shaking and tumbling, before pouring it out into the serving bowl. Interesting.

Edamame

Why the special highlight of this very common and simple dish? Cause it's twinny's favourite. And one of the dinner kakis said Sun with Moon serve the best Edamame in town... hmm...i couldn't agreed less. Though I am not sure if it's best but Sun with Moon does use fresh Edamame and did not overcook the beans till too soft.

Well it's best to have Edamame with beer or sake. AND so i couldn't resist to order when i saw my favourite Jyozen Mizu no gotoshi (Junmai Ginjyo) on the sake list. Yippy!! Heheee! Joyzen Mizu is really not the top-notch or expensive grade of sake but I like it's smooth taste that makes it very drinkable and nice. And Boooooo to the one that said my Jyozen Mizu is yucky. >_< I should have ordered Hakkaisan sake and made you pay for it!! Hohohoho!! ANYwhere congratulations to Goku and ChiChi who is expecting Gohan. The whole gang left me in stitches with too much of their craps and jokes. Hahahahahaha!

Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao (Holland Village)

It's rare that Moi will travel to the far side of the island for food so here's another one... another outlet of the Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao. Other than the previous stuffs, we had....

Beijing Pork Dumpling

Yam balls - Mummy's favourite

Both are still delicious just that the Beijing Pork Dumpling is really too much simliar in taste with the xiao long bao except their dumpling skin. The other dish was specially requested by Mum. It's rather big so I would advise you to get the restaurant to cut the yam ball into two for sharing.

And guess what, I also discovered that you can get your noodles cut by the waitress. So NO MORE tooooooooooo LONG to eat noodles. Kekekekeke!

d-coffeeshop again

Went down to d-coffeeshop for lunchie again. This time rather than ordering my usual hainanese pork chop rice, Moi tried their chicken curry.

Chicken curry

Well, Moi was a little disappointed cause the curry was a little too bland and not spicy at all... AND Moi was not even a spice-lover. The dish is more like a value meal with quantity but no quality. Hmm...better stick to my pasta and pork chop for my next visit.

Coffee Club

When Moi has to eat alone, I tend to choose cafe where I can grab some light bites, enjoy some reading, sip nice coffee... spending time alone is important...it helps me to refresh, think through stuffs and sort things out and just being with ME. ^_^)

Caesar Salad with Rosemary Chicken

Hmm...dun you find the salad a bit "turn-off"? It really turns off my appetite when I was served. I mean who would ever imagine that the salad that they ordered would turn to a huge chunks of chicken thrown together. To be honest, the taste wasn't that bad though neither perfectly good too, but the image was too shocking. No second time for Moi.

Banana Milk Shake

Well, the banana milk shake was a saviour and a real energy booster. I like it.

Vanishing Twin Syndrome

Was texting Purple who just had an ops to remove her cyst. It was after the ops did she realise that the cyst wasn't a cyst and it's was actually her twin which was absorbed by her before birth. It's the vanishing twin syndrome (VTS) which means that the other twin is a blighted ovum, one that never developed beyond the very earliest stages of embryogenesis. Sounds cheem? In lame man's term, it means the other twin dies in utero and is completely or partially reabsorbed usually by the mother but in this case, by my friend (her/his sister) instead. Yeeks. Now it does sounds a little eerie.

Me : So you are a twin just like me. ;-)

Purple : Ya ya.. no wonder I am so fascinated about twin. Do you think I shall call the news hotline and maybe they can come and interview me? Hohohoho!

Me : Ya ya ya...I think you should. And I will go cut out that newspaper article and frame it up for you. Bahahahahaha!

That's Purple....the girl who can crack such jokes just the next day after her ops. =P Girl, I am glad that your ops went smoothly and catch up with you again after your rest.

Intellectual Property

Decided to post this here cause the Muggles (Mr & Mrs Crapaud) got no sense of what is intellectual property and what's not. Irritating impossible. I think I need to go learn a new language - Ribbet Ribbet Ribbet Ribbet...

It's purely coincidental and most probably the web designer house went to the same photos stock to purchase that picture... but they sure love the same girl. Issue of Intellectual property? None as long as Singtel and Citibank had purchased the rights to use the photos. And IP of photo neither belongs to Singtel nor Citibank.

Tuckshop

Found this little bar called Tuckshop, tucks away in a little corner along tanjong pagar road. The bar is not too big, rather small I would say but that's make it really cozy. Inside that little space, every guest practically have to sit side by side. But what's even amazing, is that there is even a little live band inside the already very small place. Some might find it a bit noisy but Moi had lots of fun there.... The band isn't that dynamic but the team tonight is not soooooooo bad lah, still ok.

Someone recommended the Steak Sandwich (a must try).... Moi does not eat beef so I made my dinner kaki tried out the steak sandwich instead... And his comments were the meat tasted chewy, juicy and fatty. Yup!! Sinful isn't it? Fatty! He added that it tasted more like a steak than a hamburger. Hello! Friend! Aben den!! It's STEAK sandwich hor. Heehee!

Steak Sandwich - steak with caramelised onions and portobello mushroom, mayo on toasted focaccia

To do more service to this STEAK burger, Moi took a close-up too...

We also tried the Squid Rings which looks like calamari but cooked in a different way. The crust outside is really very crispy but the squid inside is still soft and actually "detachable" from the crust. Yummy!! The pizza is too thick and not as appetizing as the rest of the food but it's still ok. On the whole, it's more like a cozy chill-out place for music, simple food and drinks.

Squid Rings

Salami and pesto pizza on tomato paste

The food plus 2 beers and 1 coke came up to about $40 not too expensive but my poor dinner kaki got a $50 fine for illegal parking. =P Poor boy.

Chapter 2 : About Jo

Whole day at the office, I was feeling cloud nine. I usually dread having to go back during non-office hours. The server room was freezing and you really need to fight the zzzz monster and do magic within a very limited amount of time. It was something that I believe most will detest and prefer not to do unless necessary.

"Hey, you know of a good place with good ambience and serving decent Mediterranean or Italian food?", I threw out this question while busy typing away on my keyboard, back facing Mark and Addy.

"What's the occasion?", Mark asked.

"Budget? How many pax?", Addy added.

"Just treating a friend. Two.", I answered.

"Male or female?", Addy teased me and swirled his chair over to hit mine.

Mark came over too and knocked into my chair too, "A date?"

"hey, easy. It's just a friend.", I replied.

"What's kind of friend?", Both of them laughed.

They were my best of pals in the office and we were known as the Chipmunks by fellow colleagues.

"We're the chipmunks
Addy, Sam, Mark.
Do-do, do-do-do-do!"

The difference between men talk and women talk is men don’t go into the details, we don’t discuss about our inner feelings or thoughts. We exchange information, talk about practical matters like the latest car model, computer technology, even business and we go straight to the point.

Mark, who is the eldest among us, spoke first, "Sam, if it’s a dinner with a girl. Not just any girl but a girl whom you really fancy. The first date is very, very important.”

"Like a first kiss.", Addy added. "If you don't get the timing right, chances are you going to blow the whole thing up. Being too spontaneous and she might be overwhelmed. Too hesitant and she finds you timid or unsure."

"Check her body language: if her body is facing, leaning toward, or touching yours, and she is smiling, biting her lip, or playing with her hair, chances are that she's interested in you. So, pick your moment and go for it, boy. Good luck.", Mark patted my shoulder.

Addy whispered into my ears from behind,"And always keep a pack of gum or mints in your car or pocket. You won’t want to mess up the first kiss too."

Just as much as I wanted to meet her real soon, I wanted to plan our first date carefully. I scouted a few recommendations and found a little Mediterranean restaurant by the sea. It will be a good spot to spend our first date, I supposed.

I texted her to fix the date for our dinner.

Saturday is ok. So what time and where?

I can come pick you up. What time you'll be free?

I will be at my school fair with the children in the morning till late afternoon. If you don't mind going out with a skunk, we can meet up afterwards. ;-)

No worries. I will pick you from there. See you. 8D

Jo is a teacher at a special needs school, the School for the Deaf and uses sign language to talk to the children. Whenever she signs, her fingers seems to be dancing and her face got all animated and lit up. She has a very wide heart with overwhelming love and compassion for others and that's what draws me to her.

We had arranged to meet at 3pm at the school but I came an hour earlier and was walking around. From a distance, I saw her. She was doing a red Indian stand. With her 2 hands clasped and stretched upwards. Legs parted and stamping on one foot. It looked rather comical for a while. I could not help laughing. But that is her way for attracting the children's attention. They could not hear but they can feel the movement of her thumping feet and also the sudden change in her posture. Under the dazzling sun, she looks lovely.

She noticed me and brought the children along. As she spoke, her hands talked too. So that the children could understand what she was talking to me and when I spoke, her hands still moves to translate my voice to the kids even when I was not talking to them. It took me a while to get use to her arrangements. Jo firmly believes in opportunities for the children to hear as much as possible. If the kids could hear, what we had exchanged would be audible to them so they should not be derive of or taken advantage of. The kids were getting curious with my presence.

"No, no. Mr. Sam is not Teacher's boyfriend. Stop guessing and pay attention.", she signed to the giggling children. She turned to me, smiled and signed "sorry". The sign for "sorry" is made by forming either an "a" or an "s" with your right hand and rotate that hand over your heart in a few clockwise motions. I managed to do a "no" which is index finger with middle finger and thumb open and shut several times, like a duck quacking. The kids laughed.

After sending the kids off, we walked to my car.....

"Thanks for waiting so long. I didn't expect you to come so early."

"Oh... I just happened to be a little early. Don't worry."

As I approached the car, I saw a white piece of paper stuck onto my window screen. Shark!! I had traffic summon.

"Shark! You got traffic summon. What time did you reach? It's quite strict around the school area. Sorry...", she started to apologise profusely.

"No, no. It's my own fault. Don't say sorry.", I quickly squashed the fine paper in my palm before she peered and noticed the time of the summon.

She hopped into my car and sat right beside me. She was wearing a plain v-neck grey tee, blue jeans with running shoes. Her long hair pulled back in a ponytail away from her face. It made her makeup-less face fresher and more radiant. I supposed beauty really lies in the eyes of the beholder. To me, she is perfect.

The sun was about to set... it would be a perfect setting for our first date.

Let it Go

It's never easy to let it go because we are emotional creatures and because we are selfish. We need the existence and affirmation from another to prove our worth and our being. We want someone to fill that void, we want to have that relationship and bonding. So we keep holding on. We keep pressing on. Some might said it's unchangable heart, faithful, foolish. I think it's pathetic and selfish like a whinning child clinging onto something that does not belong to him.

Ballerina texted me about her final decision and seek for my support. I just replied "Selfish". To love is not only about holding on and more and more about letting it go. It's easier to hold on but it's more difficult to let go.

I read Love Is Letting Go by Claudine Goodman. She shared a story about how her youngest child smothered a baby bird to death with love because of clutching onto it too tightly. It is easy for us to shower our loved ones with so much affection that they can hardly breathe. Do we realize that it actually is possible to give them too much attention—not true love, perhaps, but at least over-concern? Do we realize such act can be due to our own selfish desire for our self-worth and expectation. I did so much for him, how could he do this to me? We are together for X years, I cant just let it go. I love him so much I cant live without him.

Woof boy taught me the lessons of letting it go and living life to the fullest. I used to think if only I have more time with Woof boy, if only this, if only that. Woof boy show me his strength of love for us. At his last stage of cancer, when he couldn't even swallow or drink, when everyday was so much pain on him, he still pressed on. AND only because of his love for us. Only because he loves us so much, only becuase he knows we dun want him to go. So despite all the suffering and pain, he pressed on. He pressed on each day to tell us his love for us. Not a day passed by without him telling us how much how much he loves us. Woof boy loves us so much BUT do we love him?? Now I question myself? I was selfish. We were selfish. We never thought of how he felt. We only thought of how we felt. How sad and devastated we would be without him. How our hearts would break if he left us. How much we need him. How much we want him. But never how much we love him....

Woof boy taught me what is love. Love is scarifice, love is unconditional. Love is no expectations. He expects nothing, he scarifices all including his life and he loves unconditional. I still remember the night before he left us, as I cradled him for the last time. For the first time, I asked what he wanted. He showed me his love for us.. all his love for us and how much he loves us and he just wants to love us till the last moment. That's is his purpose of existence. I told him we love him, I love him dearly and if his time has come, we would let him go... he seems to understand... I cried.

The next day he left us quietly. I was broken but he taught me to let go, to scarifice my own selfish interests for him.... It's like the movie Helen the baby fox. It is a very simple story about a little boy, Taichi and a fox that he picked up on his way home back from school. It shows Taichi love for Helen the baby fox and Helen's love for Taichi. Taichi never gives up on Helen till the last moment. And during the last moment, he too learns to let go when he brought Helen to the flower spot and Helen gave her last cry before departing the world.

I believe the last moments of Helen's life will be wonderful cause of Taichi's love and I admire Taichi's courage to let Helen go when her time is here too. It's never easy but if you truly love then you will let it go. Letting go can be loving too. Reminded me of Rick Price's Heaven Knows.

That if you really love her, You've gotta set her free...

Hwa Kee Barbeque Pork Noodles

One look at the signboard might left you rather bewildered, simply because the chinese name of the stall is "wanton noodles" but the english name is "BBQ Pork Noodles". But it's definitely one of my favourite stalls at the East Coast Food Centre. Well, the speciality of this wanton noodle lies in its well-charred char siew and its sauce. The sauce does taste very much like those sweet char siew sauce that we usually have when we ordered our char siew rice. Unfortunately, one rarely have the best of everything. I would say its wanton was just pleasant, nothing too special.

I managed to catch a shoot of the wanton noodles. Isn't the sauce looks very alluring? =P Kekeke! A word of advise... It can be rather crowded during weekend or friday so would recommend those who wants to try this wanton mee to come other days.

Chapter 1 - The First Step

I do not know exactly when I started to notice her. She is always so cheerful and bright. The whole room seems brighten up whenever she is around. She is either giggling away or making those around her laughing away.

As I approached her place, my heart started to beat a little faster. I had texted her the night before that I would be picking her up for the event this morning. I saw 2 figures standing at the carpark corner, hers and him. She waved and hopped behind. He sat beside me. "Good morning! Thanks for coming.", she chirped. "Morning. No problem.", I replied back, a little louder than usual. My voice volume tends to escalate a little whenever I got nervous. Sharks! I hope she did not notice that.

It was a short 5 minutes drive and we reached our destination. We started unloading the equipments and setting them up for our event at the venue. Today we are providing free screening services for the general public.

"I need 2 persons to set up the exhibition panels and the rest to follow me to the screening room.", I said. Tom raised his hand and said, "Me and Jo will do the set-up." She smiled and moved towards him.

I packed the stuffs and moved into the room with the rest. My mind was a little distracted, thinking about she and Tom setting up the panels together. They stayed close-by and were come and go back together, most of the time. No big deal but I could tell Tom cares a lot about her and both of them seem to get along very well. He is always making her laugh while me, the block-head, could never even look straight into her eyes.

The event started on time and very soon the crowd started strolling in and our hands were full, checking one individual to another. I did not have much time to be bother about other things but whenever I had time to steal a glance or two, I would spot them, she and Tom, from the corner of my eyes, teaming up. She was giggling away as usual. I excused myself to do the registration outside.

By late afternoon, the crowd lessen and we could catch a little breathe. A kid was sitting outside waiting for his mother for the screening. I chatted up with the little boy and started to play Guess my finger game with him. I was a little engrossed and then I heard a giggle from behind. It was her. I did not know when she stood there. "You, sure has a way with kid.", she giggled. She came and sat beside me and added, "Not bored? All alone here doing registration." My heart nearly skipped with her sitting so close. Her eyes were neither too big or too small, just nice like the shape of an almond nut, but they were sparkling. We chatted a while and I asked if it's ok that she left Tom alone inside. She laughed, "Sure. He'll be fine."

After the event, the whole team went for dinner. She sat beside me. I was thrilled. She ordered the same drink as me. She also loves coke. On the way home, I was counting the number of words we exchanged today. We did speak more than usual. I got to know a little bit more about her. Behind that tom-boyish character of her, she got a softer sentimental side and loves to watch Korean soap drama. As I was lost in my thoughts, reminiscing our talk; the phone rang... Some thing in office cropped up and I needed to make a detour back to office. Being in a 24/7 IT job was really draining. I got call up in the wee hours of the night and even during weekends. Comeon, it's a sunday night!!

I needed to call up Mark with regards to this hiccup. The voice on the other side was a lady...

"Mark? Mark, please.", I asked.

"Sam? Jo here. I am not Mark."

It was her!! It was unintentionally. I guessed I pressed her number by mistake. It was God's sent. I was beaming.

I apologised. She laughed as usual. I love to hear her laughters. It filled up the whole car.

"Hey, thanks so much for helping me with the free screening today.", I added.

"No worries. I am just doing my part."

"Let me treat you for dinner."

"It's ok. You don't have to."

"No, no. I mean it. Miss Jo, you are entitled to a free dinner for rendering great help. Press 1 for chinese; 2 for indian; 3 for Japanese....", I said in a robotic-like voice.

More laughters from her...

"Ok. Ok. You let me know again once you fix up.", she giggled.

My heart sung.... My heart flew....

We will be going dinner together. YES!! YES!!

Is this our first date???

To be cont....

Trial

Yesterday was the day of the first trial and we made it.... the turn out was less than ideal with 13 pax verses 211 pax that signed up. There was a heavy drizzling during our start at 5pm but that did not dampen our spirits. Well, coincidentally we also ran into the National Day Parade rehearsals and there were quite a few last minutes changes to cater to the streets blocking, the red sea of crowd etc. But then it also made our run smoother with a police officers cordoning off roads and stopping traffic. I bet the police men and the army boys must be wondering what this bunch of running-fanatic up to. kekekeke!

But the run was great and I love our organising team for our team spirit and strife to make this possible. Even, Handy Smurf and Smurfette turned up in full strength and energy to run with us. THE ever, always serious, Papa Smurf came down too and became our ambulance driver, bags guardian and water carrying labourer. Heehee! The Deafboleh! Run is just not any other run and it's not about coming to become No. 1. It's a run to create awareness of employment challenges faced by the Deaf community; to broaden employment opportunities and help the public appreciate that there should be no excuses not to employ or engage the Deaf, who are able to lead full and productive lives, given the appropriate opportunities.

Brainy Smurf leads the team... while Moi was behind chasing after lost lambs and making sure that everyone is in pace and working towards our goal. It wasn't the full 6km only about 4.7km but still worthwhile for a good training. I believe every runner deserves a pat on their shoulder for the good efforts and spirit. *wink*

I also met a Secondary School-mate during the run who had joined as one of the participant...what's a small world. BUT alas, with the poor memory of Moi, I did not have any impression of him. We had quite a chat and discovered that he actually had moderate hearing loss on his left ear and depended on his right ear since birth and all the way to University till present. It's amazing for his strength and his will. It's definitely not easy... since I have worked with this bunch of community for many years and I understood the struggles, the misunderstandings, the difficulties and the loneliness. Hey, Boy, sorry I couldn't remember you but I think you've been brave. 2 Pats on your shoulder.

And guess what, some girl participants got all google over him and kept asking me to cajole him for dinner....

Girl : Hey, who is he? You go and ask him join us dinner leh.

Me : Me? No lah! I dunno him.

Girl : U dunno him meh? He kept talking to you. Go ask him. He got car. Can give us lift.

Me : Oh!! no lah! He happens to be my secondary school-mate, but i didn't even remember him. I only know him during today's run. I really dunno him.

Girl : Quick!! Ask him!! Ask him!!

So finally I gave in to them and told him that the girls asked if he wants to join for dinner. And I am so relieved he said No. One thing I really dun get it... WHAT's SO GREAT about a guy who owns a CAR!!??? And just by talking to someone a little bit more, especially for such event, really does not mean I know anybody anyway. Sigh.

During the run, I took out Kanon for some fresh air.... =P

Super Kiasu

Because we are all super, super kiasu, we decided to throw a super advance surprise birthday celebration for Bubbles. *wink* Dear, I hope you like....

the Roses,....

And RECONFIRMATION again hor, the little pinky flowers around the white roses are REAL flowers and not FAKE ones so STOP PLUCKING the poor flowers. kekekeke!

the Ice-cream cake....

& the multi-languages of birthday songs that we sung especially for you. Kekeke!

BUT before all these, we actually had a wonderful feast at Blossom's Mummy's Adobe - steamboat and teppanyaki. Blossom's mummy is quite a cook herself too and she had spent the day before preparing all these wonderful food for us. Thanks Blossoms, Blossom's mummy and also Blossom's sister.

Our Steamboat Spread

Awesome, isn't it? Hahahaha! We stuffed ourselves silly with all these wonderful food. It's just so yummy!! And today Moi and Twinny learnt something new.
