Yesterday was the day of the first trial and we made it.... the turn out was less than ideal with 13 pax verses 211 pax that signed up. There was a heavy drizzling during our start at 5pm but that did not dampen our spirits. Well, coincidentally we also ran into the National Day Parade rehearsals and there were quite a few last minutes changes to cater to the streets blocking, the red sea of crowd etc. But then it also made our run smoother with a police officers cordoning off roads and stopping traffic. I bet the police men and the army boys must be wondering what this bunch of running-fanatic up to. kekekeke!
But the run was great and I love our organising team for our team spirit and strife to make this possible. Even, Handy Smurf and Smurfette turned up in full strength and energy to run with us. THE ever, always serious, Papa Smurf came down too and became our ambulance driver, bags guardian and water carrying labourer. Heehee! The Deafboleh! Run is just not any other run and it's not about coming to become No. 1. It's a run to create awareness of employment challenges faced by the Deaf community; to broaden employment opportunities and help the public appreciate that there should be no excuses not to employ or engage the Deaf, who are able to lead full and productive lives, given the appropriate opportunities.
Brainy Smurf leads the team... while Moi was behind chasing after lost lambs and making sure that everyone is in pace and working towards our goal. It wasn't the full 6km only about 4.7km but still worthwhile for a good training. I believe every runner deserves a pat on their shoulder for the good efforts and spirit. *wink*
I also met a Secondary School-mate during the run who had joined as one of the participant...what's a small world. BUT alas, with the poor memory of Moi, I did not have any impression of him. We had quite a chat and discovered that he actually had moderate hearing loss on his left ear and depended on his right ear since birth and all the way to University till present. It's amazing for his strength and his will. It's definitely not easy... since I have worked with this bunch of community for many years and I understood the struggles, the misunderstandings, the difficulties and the loneliness. Hey, Boy, sorry I couldn't remember you but I think you've been brave. 2 Pats on your shoulder.
And guess what, some girl participants got all google over him and kept asking me to cajole him for dinner....
Girl : Hey, who is he? You go and ask him join us dinner leh.
Me : Me? No lah! I dunno him.
Girl : U dunno him meh? He kept talking to you. Go ask him. He got car. Can give us lift.
Me : Oh!! no lah! He happens to be my secondary school-mate, but i didn't even remember him. I only know him during today's run. I really dunno him.
Girl : Quick!! Ask him!! Ask him!!
So finally I gave in to them and told him that the girls asked if he wants to join for dinner. And I am so relieved he said No. One thing I really dun get it... WHAT's SO GREAT about a guy who owns a CAR!!??? And just by talking to someone a little bit more, especially for such event, really does not mean I know anybody anyway. Sigh.
During the run, I took out Kanon for some fresh air.... =P
